About

Origins

MS-DOS was originally released in August 1981. It was the operating system for most x86 computers, most of which were developed my Microsoft. This version of DOS was one of the first commercial sucesses.

DOS originated from IBM requiring an operating system for their new PC. They approached Bill Gates to develop an OS. He eventually contacted Seattle Computer Products where Tim Paterson developed eventually what would become MS-DOS.

DOS started to decline once Windows 95 was released. Once DOS was no longer needed to run windows, many PC users stopped using DOS. Now, many people use Emulators today to play old DOS games. Steam, notably, uses a DOS emulator to run some of the retro games they sell.

How to Run DOS

To run DOS on the most modern PCs, you will need to get an emulator. The one that most people reccomend is DOSBOX, which runs on most major operating systems. After installing it, you will need to create a root folder where you will store allof your downloaded games.
